A rare beauty!
This antique Coalport flow blue commemorative porcelain plate celebrates American war hero Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley, in 1898. It is exquisitely illustrated and features a gold edge.
The plate is highly collectible, as it celebrates a key moment in the Spanish-American War. at the Harbour of Santiago, when Schley destroyed Cervera's Spanish squadron.
At the centre is a portrait of Admiral Schley bordered with floral and vine accents along with an anchor and pair of flags; the words Santiago July 1898. On the outer edge are the ships in his fleet: the Texas, Brooklyn, Oregon, Gloucester, Iowa and Indiana. The names of store the vessels are surrounded by swags of rope, swells of water, and firing cannons.
