Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, store Daily Express Publications, 1933 - classic vintage edition with Austen portrait.
My story:
I am a splendid, slightly aged around the edges, vintage edition of Jane Austen's ever-loved classic Pride and Prejudice published by the Daily Express in 1933. I am dated on my main title page.
Practicalities:
-I measure H 19cms by W 13cms D 3.5cms. -I weigh 464g.
Condition Summary:
I am generally in a very good condition with only minor signs of age and use. My outside is more store time worn than my inside.
For specific condition points see below.
Why buy me?
I have a gorgeous deep-red hardcover stamped with a Pegasus - a winged horse - motif. The gold gilt titles and further simple, decoration across my spine top and bottom add to my vintage charm and still have a cheeky twinkle!
Even more cheeky is my complimentary pinky-red dyed page top edges - see if as a kind of 1930s lip stick if you must!
Open me up to clean, cream endpapers with no illustrations, although you will see an old price written at the front of me in pencil - 2/6 (which is two shillings and sixpence in old UK currency).
Turn again to soon see an illustrated frontspiece with a portrait of my esteemed author Jane Austen taken from a portrait drawn by her sister, Cassandra Austen.
I also contain three further illustrations: Jane Austen's Desk; Steventon Parsonage and Chawton Cottage.
My edition opens with a Foreword entitled "Jane Austen-The Woman and her Book", by Wilfred Partington. Then follows a list of my illustrations and a Biographical Notice which was originally found fixed to the first edition of Northanger Abbey (1818).
Then begins my story on gently age toned pages in a decent and comfortable sized reading font.
I end with super clean, cream rear endpapers! Sigh!
All this wrapped up in a binding that is still super strong! Please someone do buy me soon - I'm simply desperate to be read again!
Condition in detail:
As I am 87 years old I will have some signs of age and use:
Hardcovers: The spine ends and book corners are noticeable rolled, creased at the bottom end and mildly worn. Note that areas of the cloth covers are slightly darkened, faded and worn (more so around their edges). There are also slight patches of fading. The gold gilt is mildly faded on the spine decoration.
Page edges: the red dyed top has a few rubs and scratches; other edges are age toned and slightly shelf worn; there are some rubs and scratches present on their surfaces.
Endpapers: the price is present at the front on pencil; there is a closed tear on the front paste down on the long edge; otherwise they are just gently aged toned.
Reading pages: a few pages have tiny natural creases in them on their tops near the hinge (not due to mis-use). There are a few folded top corners (really small) and a tiny knock to one of the long edges. Otherwise the pages are gently age toned and in an excellent vintage, condition.
Binding: Very strong with the gutters intact at both ends of the book between the endpapers.
A note from my seller:
A classic, beautiful book just grand enough to feel special, but not too grand to snuggle up on the sofa with to read! It's ageing is just enough to add to its charm not detract from it and the illustrations are a lovely bonus.
