Painting after August Macke "The Hat Shop"
August Macke painted this picture in the summer of 1914, when he once again spent holidays with his family in Hilterfingen on Lake Thun in August. In the alleyways of the old town, he saw, among other shops, this hat shop, which fascinated him by the idea of the picture. Of the image composition, the combination of the store strict geometric shapes of the building and the feminine figure is – and, of course, the hats on display.
The title of the picture is woman with parasol in front of hat shop. Size 60 x 50 cm in oil on canvas. The work was acquired by the Essen Art Museum in 1920; Seized in the 3rd Reich in 1937 and reacquired in 1953 with the help of the city of Essen. Today it is on display at the Folkwang Museum.
