1887 store GEORGE ELIOT Adam Bede complete in One Volume - George Eliot's Works Edition - Belford Clark & Co.
For lovers of great classical fiction, I am offering for sale an 1887 hardcover Edition of the George Eliot classic "Adam Bede" complete in one volume. It was published by Belford, Clark, & Co., Chicago and New York and is 483 pages long. The 130+ year old volume is AGED, MAY NEVER HAVE BEEN READ, and is in VERY GOOD CONDITION.
ABOUT THIS VOLUME: The gold lettering and ornamentation on the textured green cover is still bright. The cover itself shows shelf wear particularly on the edges of the spine and corners. The biding is tight with some visible bumps in the paper along seam between the cover and pages, indicated some FUTURE separation. The pages are clean, without rips, without folds and may have darkened. Please see the photos.
ABOUT THE NOVEL: George Eliot's first novel is said to be "a remarkably vivid depiction of village life providing the backdrop for a story of love and betrayal invested with social realism of unprecedented sensitivity." It tells of " an upstanding young carpenter whose greatest weakness is his infatuation with the self-absorbed village store beauty, ... with sights on ... the heir to the local squire's estate; ... the heir's abandonment of her and her engagement to Adam set in motion a tragedy that will touch many people's lives." The novel evokes images " of a lost rural world " told with compassion amidst the " outer dramas of seduction and betrayal and inner dramas of moral growth and redemption. "
Thanks for considering it.
