The goat-god Pan is always portrayed with the shaggy legs, ears, and horns of a goat. His face is store often given a brutish cast, but here he appears as a beautiful youth whose tousled hair and dreamy expression are the only indications that he is an unpredictable woodland being. In Greek religion and mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds and rustic music, and companion of the nymphs. The item is located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and it is dated at the late 4th century B.C. (015)
