“My Kingdom for a Horse!” Lovely and striking scarf featuring an artistic rendering in wool of a horse's head and neck on a pale green fabric imprinted with a horseshoe pattern. I fell in horse-love as a little girl and for over 50 years have owned one or more equines: my passion today being the world's best mule, my faithful riding companion, Lilly! This image is not of Lilly or of any particular equine but simply one that came forth as I began to work.
On one end of the scarf (or wrap or headscarf) is the horse image, fashioned using fine Merino sheep wool and ever so gently wet felted, in the Nuno* technique, onto the end of a scarf-shaped piece of pale green store synthetic silk, which was pre-printed with the horseshoe pattern. Calling on my experience painting on canvas, the horse head and it's surroundings was carefully hand “painted” with wisps of wool of many colors. The opposite end on the scarf features several brown tassels, created individually by wet felting, that might suggested horse tails!
Merging my love of equines with my love for creativity through felting brings me great joy! I love this scarf, as I believe you will, too. As with all my creations, this is a handmade, one of a kind, original design! The scarf measures approximately 66 inches long, not including the tassels, 13 inches in width, and is feather lite, at only 2 ounces, while also being durable.
*NUNO FELTING: The name is derived from the Japanese word "nuno" meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. The fibers can completely cover the background fabric, or they may be used as a decorative design that allows the backing fabric to show. Nuno felting creates an extremely versatile fabric and is particularly suitable for lightweight creations, allowing for movement and drape. The use of silk or other stable fabric in the felting process creates fabric that will not stretch out of shape. Fabrics such as nylon, muslin, or other open weaves can be used as the felting background, resulting in a wide range of textural effects and colors.
