This wonderful vintage bull is a traditional folk art of Peru, the torito de Pucara, or little bull of Pucara (a village in southern Peru). The handmade pottery figurine or statue is also a pitcher, to be filled with chicha (sacred beverage made of corn) or pisco.

These bulls are found on rooftops across southern Peru to bring good luck, fertility, and prosperity. Each of the characteristics--the handle, the ridges on the neck, the bulging eyes, and even the color of the glaze-- carry their own special symbolism.

These terracotta pieces are often used as roof store ornaments as well. Prior to moving into a new home, people place two bulls in the middle of the peak of the house as a symbol of protection and happiness.
The original vessels were used as offerings (qonopas or illas) andean rituals. Later they were used as ornaments.
