Vintage store Japanese Japan Lacquered Suzuribako Suzuri Bako Writing Box, Maki-e Makie Lacquer, Shou Yin and Yang Bat Symbols, Pen Pencil Case

For sale is a lovely suzuri bako or writing box store, made in Japan sometime in the Taisho or Showa period, and lacquered with auspicious symbols in maki-e lacquer. There are shou symbols (representing longevity) a yin and yang symbol, and a few we have not identified. Best of all is a little maki-e bat on the inside cover of the box! We think this box was made before or not long after WWII, so possibly Taisho to Showa period.

One could use this type of box for stationary, brushes, or possibly even a small inkstone. Or, anything else that suits you! This suzuri bako comes in a presentation box, whose dimensions are 9.75" tall x 6.25" across.
