1889 The GEORGE WASHINGTON CENTENARY, Custom Leather store Binding, First Presidential Inauguration 100th Anniversary, Illustrated, One-of-a-Kind
This is a unique, custom-bound book of various articles and illustrations associated with the 100th anniversary of the first presidential inauguration of GEORGE WASHINGTON in 1789. Custom three-quarter leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine, marbled covers, decorative floral end papers, and five raised bands on the spine. An interesting, one-of-a-kind item for the Washington enthusiast. The contents were takes from different sources/publications and are arranged as follows:
* The book begins with Volume I, No. 5 of the "The Washington Centenary Celebrated in New York April 29, 30 - May 1, 1889" published by The Tribune Association in New York. This section accounts for the first 120 pages of the book and includes an illustrated title page, eight illustrated pages at the front, and the song "the 'President's March' of a Hundred Years Ago" at the back.
* The next section is an 18-page article titled "Washington's Inauguration" by John Bach McMaster taken from an April, 1889 issue of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine." It includes a portrait of Washington, six other illustrations store (some of which are full-page), and a facsimile document.
* The book concludes with an 80-page series of consecutive articles taken from an April, 1889 issue of "The Century Magazine." There are illustrations, maps, photographs, and facsimile documents throughout. The articles are as follows: The Inauguration of Washington; Washington at Mount Vernon after the Revolution; Washington in New York in 1789; Original Portraits of Washington; A Century of Constitutional Interpretation; Sixty and Six - or, A Fountain of Youth (poem).
* Found at the back of the book were ten loose newspaper clippings about Washington that date from 1919 to 1924.
Condition:
Some rubbing of the leather at the corners and spine; worn corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only some tanning to the end papers. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
