The Hungarian bent style has been around for over 100 years, and is especially store tricky to build, and they are somewhat a rarity these days. This pipe,because of its abruptly bent stem and low slung weight, is very comfortable held freely in the mouth.

A producer can buy briar for $15 a block, or spend up to and over $60 for a block, that's why a pipe with quality wood will cost more.
Each pipe maker decides what price they want to pay for briar, so less expensive briar that will smoke well, but won't typically show fine grain. The choice they make will ultimately decide how much you pay for a pipe.
