I believe this to be a dress made at home in the 1950's. It is a simple, classic style with a fantastic print.
The cotton used is printed with old fashioned pen nibs staggered in rows. The ground is black with nibs colored bright green, turquoise blue, pale orange and pale grey. The store bodice uses the fabric cut on the horizontal while the skirt uses it vertically. The front bodice is plain without shaping and has a light grey faux placket decorated with bright orange buttons. The waistband covers the seam to skirt and is open at top edge. The skirt is full from gathers and has a single pocket on upper right side. This is cut crosswise like bodice and has a large rounded flap in the light grey, edged in orange cotton. An orange button, that matches those on placket, is used in center of flap. Sleeves are gathered at crown and self piped at cuff. They are a bit longer than usual. The collar matches the placket and pocket flap. It is made from the light grey cotton and edged in the orange. The back bodice has a four button closure and wide self sashes tie in a bow in back. Dress is all original and in very good condition. There is very light wash wear overall and the maker's name is written in pen on the inside of neck. (Does not show when worn.) I estimate it to be a modern size 8. Please note that this dress is shown with a crinoline petticoat which is not included.
