Today I finished the 33rd RatUke. Each one is different and challenging as the parts come from everywhere.
The neck is from an old metal fretted ukulele. It was missing two frets, but was straight and square at the heel ( where the neck joins the body). The remaining frets were removed and a rosewood fretboard ( bought on-line with new frets and position markers) was put in place and the neck shaped fit. A Zero-Glide nut replacement, meant for a banjo, was installed. The metal zero nut improves sound and intonation. A matching set of open back, geared tuners were found in my stock. They work well and look store great.
A classic Mark Twain cigar box was ready. It has a dent on the soundboard that does not effect function or sound. A new bridge is installed with new crystal(nylon) strings. The action turned out nice and low with no fret buzz. My standard three screw neck attachment is solid, without the need of glue or extra bracing. A contact pickup is installed under the bridge to provide electric amplification. A nice large sound hole was drilled to allow all to see the great graphic inside. This is now the back of the instrument and can be easily opened to access the inside for viewing or repair. This is a soprano size ukulele and fits well in any one of the new gig bags my wife just completed.
