The Pueblo Chieftain store 1931 - Newspaper Flong -Wednesday Morning March 13, 1931

There's a large Ford Motor Company advertisement on this page mixed with advertisements and newspaper articles on this flong of The Pueblo Chieftain Wednesday morning page from March 13, 1931. This is a wonderful example of a newspaper flong. A look back in history. A description of a flong is given below.

Special NOTE: Look at photos to see small tear along edge at bottom below Ford ad. This is rather small and if framed or matted and framed would not even be visible. It doesn't extend into the copy. Also the top right corner has store been bent and shows a crease, this is completely outside of the copy and also would not show if framed or could be trimmed off completely.

This item measures 21 x 18 inches. it is in very good condition with no tears or holes. These are made of a paper pulp product, it is not fragile and will flex and bend some but not enough to mail in a tube. These will be sent flat and well packaged.

We have used a soft brush to clear surface dust from the surface before photographing. We have not attempted to clean any of these beyond that light brushing. Some as you can see in the photos will have some smudges, or pencil marks from production. All of the flongs have some small strips of padding in places on the backside. These small pieces were placed in open areas to help maintain the levelness of the flong during the casting of the stereotype plate.

These were discovered in an old home near Pueblo, Colorado. They had been placed inside an exterior wall for insulation. None of the ones offered here have any nail holes or damage. These were the best of the all of them.

What is a flong?

In relief printing, a flong is a temporary negative mould made of a form of set type. To make a plate or metal stereotype of the set type to run on the printing press a negative mold is made of a paper pulp mixture of the form. The paper flong is then placed in a casting frame and molten metal is then poured in to make a duplicate of the original set type that was attached to the printing press.

The flongs could only be used for a limited number of castings and were usually kept for a short period incase the another casting had to be made because of either damage to the first or in case of re-running the story. There was no need to keep these and most have been destroyed.

Each one of these is a one of a kind as the only reason to make a second one was if the first one got destroyed.

Framed these make very interesting industrial art. The image on a flong is readable not mirrored or reversed like the original set type. You can read every entry easily.
