ANTIQUE COPPER & CAST IRON PONY or HORSE BIT - Late 1800's to Early 1900's - This is a RARE HAND FORGED Old Bit that Was Once INLAID with SILVER!

I'm not going to tell you that I know all about Bits and Headstalls and Saddles. Collecting over 200 bits did, however, lead me to find out which ones are rare I think this one certainly qualifies.

Look closely….not only is it store beautiful in overall form, but it originally had an inlay of sliver on the sides of the shanks. The photos show the remnants of the silver and the impressions left from its application.

I believe that this it was hand forged. The joining of the bottom ring to the shank definitely is hand forged. The large rein rings have a little sloppy finishing on the interior. Perhaps this was the result of the adding of the silver inlay.

The cast iron itself has a beautiful smooth feel that is typical of old cast iron. There are no broken places or cracks.

Note that the area of the copper mouth piece that is a circle (called a port) has a hole drilled on either interior side. This could have been to add a roller that some people liked …. the horse could play with it using his tongue.

I photographed each end of the copper center bar. I think the marks are impressions from the pony's teeth, not a trademark.

The overall size of this bit leads me to believe that it was for a pony.

The bit is 4 3/4 inches wide at the top where the headstall would be attached. It is 3 3/4 inches wide at the base rings that were for the reins. The shanks measure 5 inches.

Price is $120.00. Shipping is $10.00.
