A neat set of 4 nautical Ship "Blue Print" glasses by Libbey, still in their original packaging. Such a neat pattern that showcases a "blue print" of the late 1700s ship the "Rattlesnake". These glasses feature a Cobalt blue and stark white enameled pattern that has various "blue print" details including: 20 Gun Ship Sloop, Rattlesnake of the Revolution, American-Built Privateer Ship, Rattlesnake 1781-1884 and the length of the ship. We don't want to remove the glasses from their original packaging, so we did our best to capture the pattern by zooming in. We've attached a photo of the original Rattlesnake ship (see last photo) and included a summary below.
Here's a bit of history on the Rattlesnake ship: The Revolutionary War privateer USS Rattlesnake was designed in 1779-80 by John Peck, a Boston naval architect. The original Rattlesnake was built in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and in style resembled a miniature frigate, which had a separate quarterdeck and forecastle. She carried up to 20 guns (probably six and nine pounders) and had a usual complement of 85 men. The original USS Rattlesnake was commissioned by the Continental Congress of the fledgling United States and helped to win the Revolutionary War by bringing in captured British ships. There is a replica of the Rattlesnake located in Jacksonville, Florida which is owned by the Maritime Heritage Foundation and is presently being completely restored.
Maker/era: Libbey, 1970s
A quick summary about this glassware maker: The Libbey Glass Company has been manufacturing glassware since the 20th Century and is still producing high quality glassware today. Certain vintage Libbey glassware pieces (but not all of them, depending on the size and type of piece) is signed with a cursive “L” within a circle or ring. The mark actually appears backwards if viewed from outside of the glass, but it appears correctly when looking down through the inside.
Hallmarks: These particular Libbey glasses are signed "J Scott" (a designer from the 70s who came up with this glassware pattern for Libbey; he did a number of other glassware patterns including a whimsical Tennis racket design).
Condition: NOS (new old stock).
Measurements: Each glass measures just shy of 5" tall and holds 12 ounces.
These glasses would be a great gift for a nautical enthusiast or anyone who collects/builds ship models. Cheers!
**On shipping: We take our packaging very seriously and carefully wrap all pieces well to ensure safe delivery. Please note: we are not making a penny on shipping. We pack our items securely to ensure safe arrival ( (especially our glassware, which means a larger, heavier box)!
