Danish Modernist Pipe Stand Signed Just Andersen Denmark 1930s Pewter ware
ITEM: A wonderful piece of Scandinavian Modernism, this pewter stand is by Danish designer Just Andersen. It's a stylized Whale with a textured, wire wrapped tail that was intended as a pipe stand but can just as well be for spoons or ladles, tea bags or what have you. I've included a photo of it in use as a pipe stand, just to give you an idea of how well it works. (The pipe is not included in the listing and does not belong to me.) This sculptural piece has all the clean lines one looks for in a good, modernist design. It dates to about the mid 1930s and is pewter. As a pipe stand, it does a great job in that it's very stable and it also acts as a kind of display stand too. The gentle curves are naturalistic and shallow enough to see the pipe in it. It cups the bowl of the pipe at such an angle as to avoid any spillage of the contents. It's just a great design! Strictly speaking, it's classified as Tobacciana. But I'm opening the discussion to include other things that could be held by it, such as soup ladles, baking spoons, tea bags, garlic or spice buds, to hold and pass garnishes at table top. Basically, it's as useful as you choose it to be. But more to the point; it looks fantastic just as an object d'art! It has a certain look to it that will make any lover or collector of Scandinavian Mod happy to have. A true treasure of yesteryear, signed with the big A triangle with Just inside of it, Danmark, and the numbers 2554.
About the artist:
Just Andersen, born in 1884, Andersen was a Danish metal works, sculptor and silversmith. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. He was trained as an ornament maker by Hans Lamberg Petersen, moving on to study under Jens Moller-Jensen at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Just Andersen worked with famed jewelers Georg Jensen, Anton Michelson and Peter Hertz before opening his own studio shop in 1918. His love for all things Neoclassical and Scandinavian brought him great success and he worked in many types of metals creating jewelry, vases, candlesticks, light fixtures, sculptures, smalls and more. Just Andersen died in 1943, leaving us with a variety of beautiful pieces to remember him by. His work is store well respected and considered quite collectible as his runs were smaller in quantity but higher in quality than many. Not rare exactly. But certainly less than common in the markets today as many of his works are already in various collections worldwide.
SIZE: This fantastic beast measures just over 4” long by 1 1/2” wide by about 1 3/4” tall or deep.
CONDITION: In good vintage condition showing minimal wear consistent with age and use. A wonderful surface patina present with minute surface scratches in keeping with age/make/materials. Patina is a natural process of oxidation over time. It is not tarnish, rust or verdigris. The pewter has an aged surface with a depth of luster to it that is warm and inviting. I see no chips, breaks, dings or dents. There is a natural scuff mark where the bowl sits on whatever table top or shelf you display it upon. This too is a natural sign of age. It's a pre-loved item. True vintage, some wear expected. I see no damages to alert you to however I always recommend using your zoom feature to view all 10 photos, to better ascertain condition meets your own standards as our ratings may differ. As a vintage item that has over 80+ years of use behind it, some surface scratches are to be expected. None are so deep as to be considered as damaging. The signature is legible and correct. I think the numbers are a design code however I'm not 100% sure. Regardless, it's a wonderful example of type and style and would make a great addition to any collection of vintage to antique Tobacciana, Scandinavian Mod, Danish Modernist or just because you like it! A really good find.
