VINTAGE SHAWL, 100% WOOL, Scalloped Shawl, Stripe Ground, Sculptured Fringe, Boiled Wool Shawl, Vintage Shawl w/Fringe, India, 27 x 74 inches, ½" Fringe from the warp and weft on all 4 sides!

Boiled wool! Lightweight, soft boiled wool dates back to the Middle Ages. The process of boiling wool has been perfected, to create a denser fabric. Once the wool fabric has been woven, it is subjected to hot water and agitation without the use of chemicals, to cause the scaly wool fibers to meld and shrink up to half their original size. The resulting material is blocked and the process is repeated until a uniform fabric is achieved that no longer shrinks while wet. Wool that has been boiled is thought to be warmer, more durable, and windproof. Boiled Wool is also lighter In weight & NOT itchy.

In the past decade, shawls have become a fashion necessity for women in the US as well as France, Italy, and England! The last winter season in America was been a complete guessing game. When you add the latest obsession with the TV weather honchos to predict the temperature and then tell you ..."But it will FEEL Like 8*F". It didn't turn cold in NYC until 2021 came blowing in. Thank-you Canada! ......and that is why Shawls have become even more important to the American Woman. It's our plan "B" .......they keep the cold from creeping down your neck...or add an extra layer or 2 when you have to deal with a wind, making it "FEEL LIKE" Alaska!

So, My shawl addiction began in India with the famous "Toosh"....and it has been a life-saving addiction for me because I live on the Windy-est corner in NYC! I have also enjoyed the duality of shawls~ they can be decorative additions to every room in my house. That was when I began to search out home furnishing weavers in India....and discovered Boiled wool. This was one of the original samples created for this classification.

From the Honey Gamboge Collection in the 80's. ~New~Never worn~ Perfect Condition! It measures 27 x 74 inches, with ½" Fringe on all 4 edges! The woven design flips from a predominant red palette to a multi-color mix, brites to muted reds. A joyful mix of teal, red, gold, purple, chartreuse, blue and orange.
Again~ India has NEVER been afraid of COLOR!
