The Goliath Grouper is found in the east coast of the United states and South America as well as the west coast of Africa, primarily in shallow tropical waters among coral and artificial reefs down to 160 feet. They live in brackish estuaries, oyster beds, canals, and among mangrove trees. They can reach extremely large sizes, growing to lengths over 8 feet over 800 lbs. although they are more usually around 400 lb. when mature. Goliath groupers eat crustaceans, other fish, octopodes, young sea turtles, sharks, and barracudas. They are known to attack divers and have even been seen attacking sharks. Long nose Butterfly fish
The longnose butterflyfish or forceps butterflyfish is a small fish which grows up to 9 inches in length and is widespread in coral reefs throughout the tropical waters of the Pacific area from the eastern coast of Africa to Hawaii. They eat small shrimp and crustaceans and are are very territorial and patrol their patches of coral with a partner.
This is one of a series of coral reef dwelling fish sculptures I have been designing and making in the last year. Each of the fish forms are inspired by studying several photos of the species of fish, then creating a series of drawings combining the best parts of the images and then refining the shapes and dimensions until they feel correct. I either leave the wood natural with burn marks from the cutting process the only coloration or paint it black for a more graphic look.
the sculpture is made of thin plywood with spring steel wire joints that allow the fins to be folded flat for storage or shipping. They are coated with a light UV protective clear coat that also protects against moisture. It can be stood up on the supplied acrylic or wooden stand, Hung on the wall with the supplied hanger or even hung from overhead from a thin wire or monofilament, as they are very light. They are recommended for indoor or sheltered use only. store
