Description:
This store is a beautiful cabinet plate and a truly striking example of Arts and Crafts Movement design from 1910-1912. Eight wood violets are painted around the rim, joined by to the central violet by green runners. The rim is adorned with 22k gold and tiny violet dots. It is signed by the artist, "V Sahdala."
Although it doesn't have the W A Picard mark (in that era a paper sticker was used and often came off), it bears the distinctive look of a W A Picard piece, part of Haviland Limoges. This is further verified by comparison with other marked Picard works 1910-1912, and by the artist signature. (Picard pieces are almost always signed by the individual artist.)
History:
Cabinet plates were used as decorative pieces in china cabinets amid the best china and serving ware. They are not as plentiful, but often of better quality and condition than serving platters because they weren't used. Limoges was high-end china, and a Picard design like this one was highly sought after. The ladies of this family were particularly fond of violets, so this piece was a favorite, and it was displayed in their china cupboard for over 90 years.
