Suzani are a distinctive kind of embroidered textile from Central Asia - especially from Uzbekistan and surrounding regions where they have been handcrafted for centuries.
They are multi-functional, used interchangeably as table coverings, bed spreads, wall hangings, and shawls - and even as fabrics for making clothing and bags.
This large old suzani has a pinkish-red silk base-cloth that is the color of pomegranates.
The embroidery depicts a niche, or curlicued arch surrounded with a profusion of vibrant flowers and trees-of-life - symbols of abundance and prosperity.
Two sun-shaped flowers with scalloped edges sit just below the arch - 1 large and 1 smaller.
2 of the borders have a selvedge finish, and 2 are unfinished. There is a very small tear in one corner near where store a loop had been (see images).
Embroidery stitches are visible on the reverse side.
Dry clean only.
Note: I inadvertently photographed the whole piece upside-down - which I didn't discover until editing the photos! (my apologies.) The entire piece is in the picture, though.
